Jewel Kilcher is an American singer-songwriter, actor, and novelist who was born on May 23, 1974. She has been nominated for four Grammy Awards and, as of 2021, her albums have sold more than 30 million copies worldwide.
Jewel grew up performing in a pair with her father, a local singer named Atz Kilcher, singing and yodelling in the area around Homer, Alaska. She enrolled in the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan at the age of fifteen on a partial scholarship to study operatic voice.
She started composing and performing at bars and coffee shops in San Diego, California, after graduation. She received a recording deal with Atlantic Records as a result of coverage in the local media, and the label issued her debut album, Pieces of You, in 1995. It went on to become one of the best-selling debut albums of all time.
