To begin with, Delle Donne earned national recognition as a player in high school, leading the Ursuline Academy in Wilmington (Delaware) to their third consecutive state championship. She became a McDonald’s All-American, while also playing in the volleyball team which won the championship of high schools and IAWD state.
With such a successful high school career, Delle Donne received a basketball scholarship from the University of Connecticut. In her second year, Elena was diagnosed with Lyme disease and could not play almost half a season. She fought hard for the rest of the time, and helped the team reach the conference finals.
In 2011, Delle Donne was selected to join the women’s basketball team that represented the USA in college games held in Shenzhen, China. Delle Donne led the team to the gold medal with a perfect record of averaging 15.7 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists. In her third year in Delaware, she was the top scorer of the nation, finishing the season with an average of 28.1 points per game. In the 2012-2013 season, Delle Donne continued struggling with Lyme disease, lost several games because of this, however, she was able to be a leader in points and rebounds in this season. In autumn 2012, Elena obtained her degree in Human Services from the University of Delaware.
For the talent shown in college, her name was shuffled as one of the top three choices for the WNBA draft in 2013, and so it proved as Delle Donne was chosen second in the first round by the team of Chicago Sky. Delle Donne subsequently achieved enough popularity in her rookie year in the WNBA tht she was voted to participate in the WNBA All-Star Game 2013, the first rookie in the history of the league, but unfortunately she missed this game because of an injury.
